BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT -

Positive and Negative Behaviour

Effective as of 27 August 2007

To maintain a school environment where positive behaviour is modeled, expected, supported and acknowledged and where negative behaviour is managed in a timely and consistent way.
  • Behaviour management is a dimension of pastoral care. Catholic education provides a school environment where the students are helped to grow as individuals with unique capabilities. The aim is that the children will learn to manage their own behaviour in a way that reflects their personal identity and develops social responsibility for others and the environment. Part of this learning involves clear consequences for unacceptable behaviour.
  • The staff of St Joseph's Primary School will act promptly and firmly in a respectful way with children when their behaviour is unacceptable. They will also acknowledge children who consistently behave positively and responsibly.
The policy includes specific behaviour management steps as outlines in the Behaviour Management Procedures and Guidelines for the following situations:
  • in the classroom
  • within the school grounds after school hours
  • eating and play areas
  • out of bounds

POLICY STATEMENT

Children are exposed to a wide range of behaviour through the media of television, computers, cinema and other area of everyday life. Some of this behaviour is not positive; some of it is disrespectful and even destructive. Family and school life provide an anchor for children by modeling, expecting and supporting consistent, positive behaviour and addressing behaviour that is not acceptable. This approach recognizes that positive behaviour will lead to mutual respect and co-operation among children, teachers and parents.
